You Have No Time to Love Them

Mother Teresa has been quoted as saying, "If you can't feed a hundred people, feed just one."  Why feed one person if you can't feed them all you ask?  Because you keep that ONE alive!  That ONE that you feed is a daughter or son, a cousin, a nephew or a niece, a mother or a father, a grandmother or a grandfather to someone.  You may not know them personally, but that person's life means something to their family.  If you can feed a mother and keep her alive to take care of her children, isn't that something?!

Nicole reminded us all of this story on the yahoo group today.  I first saw this story 3 years ago, and every time I read it, I get emotional.  This is our purpose, and so fitting with what we are trying to do here at CHILDHOPE- ZAMBIA.  Of course, we want to help every child, but we must start somewhere.  Every child is important.  Instead of throwing our hands up and saying we can't help all 1200 children in Mazabuka today, so we won't help any of them- we are helping them one by one.  Here is the starfish story:

An old man was walking down the beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a young man picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. As the old man approached the young man, he asked; "Why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?" The young man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. "But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish, exclaimed the old man. "How can your efforts make any difference?" The young man looked down at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety in the sea, he said;

"It makes a difference to this one!"

More great quotes from Mother Teresa:
"People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."

— Mother Teresa

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them."

— Mother Teresa

"It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish."

— Mother Teresa
And now, you see, if you didn't know before, that no matter how little you may be doing, you are doing SOMETHING!  And that something you are doing means a lot to these children and their families!

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not." — Dr. Seuss

  1. I love the starfish story and I like the quotes from Mother Teresa. I went to an all girl Catholic school and at the time, there was a convent there, many of the nuns had served in missions in Africa,Calcutta, and South America ( the order is a teaching/missionary order) Anyway, due to my age we were often taught about the deeds of Mother Teresa, as she was still alive and working in Calcutta at the time. We were told to try to work to live up to her ideals.. to live our lives with kindness and compassion that she was everything that a good Christian and a good Catholic should be... ( of course they also had many many quotes from Ghandi around the school too ) anyway, thanks for posting the quotes.. excellent
