June Distribution 2010- The Big Day Part 1

Elmedah above and Eunister below

Fungai above and Hampande below

Juma above and Melody below

Nsandule above & Shadreck below

Here are pictures of the first 8 children getting their first gifts!!! The primary children are wearing their new uniforms and holding their mosquito nets and items/letters from packages. The preschool child Shadreck is wearing his new shoes and holding his exercise books, and school supplies.

As you can see the children appeared quite shocked. I think it will take them a few months of getting letters from their sponsors and continually seeing sponsorship gifts for them to realize it is not just a dream. They have no idea what a sponsorship program is, so it is all just new and unknown for them. More photos to come!

June Distribution 2010-Part 7

These are the latest items bought for June distribution. The black canvas shoes are for the 4 preschool children. The white collar uniforms are for some of the primary girls. Today is the big day!! It is 4:00PM in Zambia right now, so the excitement is already in full force!! Stay tuned for more great pictures from our children sponsored in May!!!

By the way, today is the last day to sponsor a child in June. Children sponsored in June get their first gift distribution in July!!

5th Care Package to Zambia

Here are the contents of the 5th care package that is going to Zambia. This one will go out tomorrow 6/30/10. The last picture shows some beanies that were donated that the Zambia team can give out to children as they see a need. I had one sponsor help with postage a couple of weeks ago, so I am using those funds to ship the 7 beanies. The other items are items that were purchased and the money made from the items has been donated to purchase mosquito nets for the next children that become sponsored.

This is the last care package for a while. I will probably send another one in October for Christmas gifts, but for now, I need a break :o)

Have a great day!!

June Distribution 2010-Part 6

I sent Chim an extra donation back in May and asked him to purchase pencils and colored pencils for the children for letter writing day. These items were purchased, and you can see them above. The children will use these to write their letters, and the Zambia team will hold on to the supplies after they are done writing (so they can use them on the next letter writing day). Seeing these pictures of their cool writing supplies makes me that much more excited and anxious for letter writing day Wednesday.

Today is the 28th, so there are only 2 more days to sponsor a child, if you would like them to be included in July distribution! There are new children posted, too.

June Distribution 2010-Part 5

Little Dorice, above, is wearing the uniform with the white collar. It is these type uniforms that are currently out of stock. Because the uniforms are out of stock, they will not be available until some time Tuesday. Once the staff is able to pick them up, they will have distribution on Wednesday.

By the way, we have an additional 5 children whose sponsorship is pending, which means that the sponsor will be sending money for them shortly. Since I know that these sponsors are completely reliable and will be sending in the sponsorship fees within the next few days, I have chosen my 8th child-Dorice!! I do not have her bio information yet, but she is in the 1st grade.

We now have a total of 65 children sponsored!! Ya'll rock!!! Thanks for helping these needy children! We are going to change their world!

African Drummers and Dancers

Meet Leonard Hachilala #657

This is 13 year old Leonard. As you can see, he is in desperate need of a sponsor. He needs medical attention for his eye. It is hard enough to survive in rural Zambia, but it is even harder when you have medical issues you can not afford to take care of. I can't imagine how that must feel!
I do remember when I was laid off. My family was suddenly uninsured because we could not afford the $1,400 a month COBRA payment. Suddenly, I was suffering from bronchitis and couldn't do a thing for myself because I couldn't afford health care. Imagine how that must be for Leonard. My situation was temporary. His is permanent. His parents financial situation is not changing, so without sponsorship, he has no hope for medical relief.
Leonard is in the 6th grade and has a birthday on April 22. He likes to read (even more reason to get help for his eye!). His favorite subject is English, and he would like to be a teacher when he grows up. He lives in Naleza with his grandparents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. He helps his grandparents by cultivating the family garden.

If you can sponsor Leonard for only $9 a month, please click "sponsor primary student" in the upper right hand corner of the blog. If you would like to help him get medical treatment, click on "make one-time donation" and specify that you would like the funds to be used for Leonard. He will be so grateful for any help provided!

UPDATE- Leonard is SPONSORED!! Thank you so much!!

Meet Ordetor Malambo #559!

This cute 4th grader is Ordetor. She is in the 4th grade, and her favorite subject is English. She would like to continue her schooling and become a nurse, so that she can help make the sick children feel better. Her favorite thing to do in her free time is cooking for her family. She, also, helps in the home by sweeping the house. She lives with her mother, 1 brothers and 4 sisters.
Ordetor will be celebrating her 12th birthday on August 7th- It sure would be nice to surprise her with a sponsor for her birthday! If that sponsor is you, please click on "sponsor primary student" in the upper right hand side of the blog. Thanks!

Meet Naomi Moonga #563

This sweet princess is named Naomi. She is 11 years old and in the 5th grade. She would like to be a Catholic Nun when she grows up. Her favorite subject in school is math, and she even likes to play soccer. She lives in Simwaba with her parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. She is in charge of washing the dishes at home. If you would like to sponsor Naomi for only $9 a month, please click on "sponsor primary student" in the upper right hand side of this blog. Thank you for giving her a helping hand!!

June Distribution 2010-Part 3

155- Mesha Chinza- June
159- Dabson Kapoba- June

307- Lasty Madyabi- June

431- Rebbeca Chibilika- June
432- Maurren Masaka- June
433- Chinyama Mizinga- June
449- Chipo Nzala- June
462- Melody Habasimbi- June
511- Nchimunya Mooba- June
523- Gladness Chipuya- June
525- Ivy Shanamaila- June
574- Francis Kasongo- June

We will continue to raise funds to purchase mosquito nets, and the money made from the sales of the jackets, jewelry, Hotwheels cars, shirts, toothbrushes, and socks will go to the mosquito net fund. We would like to make sure that as children get sponsored, they will, also get mosquito nets. However, this requires an additional $6 per child. I am confident we can do it. We now just need to raise funds to purchase nets for the children that were sponsored after the list above was made (an additional 6 children for now).

(By the way, for those that were waiting to find out who my 7th child would be, I have uploaded her picture to this post. Elie is my latest CHZ child, and now I have a child in each grade from preschool to 6th grade.)

Help us Buy Mosquito Nets!

These socks can fit a 3 year old to a 7 year old. I have 6 different styles- soccer, baseball, football, surf, basketball, and USA. Each pair of socks is $2 each, and 100% of the money goes to the fund to purchase more mosquito nets, so that every child will have one!!!

The toothbrushes above are going for $3 each. $1.50 of each purchase will go to the fund to purchase mosquito nets and the other $1.50 will be used to purchase the toothpaste to go with the toothbrushes! The toothpaste will be purchase in Zambia, so you will be helping the Zambian economy as well :o)
These totally cool Hello Kitty and Mickey Mouse pens are $1 each. 100% of the money will be used to purchase mosquito nets!! Plus, your sponsor child will get a really cool pen so they can write you lots of letters :o)

All of these items can be purchased by using the "make a one-time donation" button in the upper right hand corner of the blog. I am sending out care package #5 at the end of this week, so your sponsor child should receive their items around the end of July. Make sure that you specify to whom you want your gifts to go to, and you may purchase items for children who do not yet have a sponsor. Have a great week!

First Care Package to Zambia- Arrival

The first care package has arrived in Zambia!! While it seems like it took forever to get there, it took just a little over 1 month. These items will be distributed to the children in the June distribution!!! One small note, please make sure to mark your package as a gift with $0 value! Zambia will collect taxes if you do not do this. I marked the box with a $1 value because I thought I have to put something. The Zambia team was charged 6,500 Kwacha to pick up the package (US$1.27). Just something to make a mental note of.

June Distribution 2010-Part 2

Here are some closer and different angled pictures of the items that were purchased to give out at the June distribution. These items were purchased with the donations earned from the sales of the online items such as jewelry, jackets, etc. In addition, there was a $70 donation from a donor. As you can see, the Zambia team was able to purchase a lot of life saving items that they will be giving out to the 1st 30 children sponsored. We will, hopefully, be able to raise enough in extra donations every month to be able to provide these items for every sponsorship group!! Thank you for all you are doing to help these children!!

Part of June Distribution 2010!

Check out all of these gifts!! I have not yet sent the 3rd wire to Zambia with which the Zambia team will purchase the children's uniforms... BUT, these items were purchased with May sponsorship funds and with the funds that were received for the purchase of mosquito nets. These are the medical items purchased:

1. ORS oral rehydration salts- Taken from Wikipedia: "Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is a simple treatment for dehydration associated with diarrhea, particularly gastroenteritis/gastroenteropathy, such as that caused by cholera or rotavirus. ORT consists of a solution of salts and sugars which is taken by mouth. It is used around the world, but is most important in the developing world, where it saves millions of children a year from death due to diarrhea—the second leading cause of death in children under five."

2. Chlorine: Chlorine is needed in water purification to make it fit for human consumption as drinking water. Water which has been treated with chlorine is effective in preventing the spread of water born disease because it is effective against almost all bacteria and viruses, as well as amoeba.

3. Treated Mosquito nets: Stop the spread of malaria! These nets are the most effective ones around because the are treated with repellant. They must be retreated every 6 months to stay effective.

4. Other medicines were included, but I am not sure at this time which ones were purchased. I will have to update that part later.

The Hamooya Children Part 3

This is Chinyama. Of the 3 Hamooya children, she is the worst off. When CHZ visited her here in this video she was suffering from malaria. Medication was given at the visit, and she will be receiving a mosquito net during the June gift distribution. Now she just needs a sponsor. Here is what was said in the video:

Chim asked the girl what her name was and the grade she was doing. She told him that she was Chinyama Hamooya (#92) in the 5th grade and living with her grandmother because her mother had died. Chim asked her what kind of education support she needs .She told him that she needs help paying her school fees. She also needs uniforms and school shoes. He asked her how her health was. She told him that she had Malaria and diarrhea.

You can find Chinyama under the primary girl page. She can be sponsored for only $9 a month!!

UPDATE: Chinyama is sponsored! Thank you so much!! - Sara

The Hamooya Children Part 2

This is Fides Hamooya. She is, also, not too animated. The children are suffering severely because they do not get a regular meal. This is part of the problem. Here is what is said in the video of preschool age Fides:

Chim asked the small girl her name and grade .She told him that she was Fides Hamooya and attends the CHILDHOPE supported ECCDE at Simwaba center. Chim asked what help she needed with school .She said she needed education support in terms of books for school and uniforms. She usually has a headache and stomach pains.

Update- Fides' sponsorship is pending. There is a sponsor interested in sponsoring her. Her status will change to sponsored once payment has been received.

The Hamooya Children Part 1

The Hamooya children didn't fare very well when everyone was looking at the videos of the children in need of sponsors. The 3 Hamooya children did not get a sponsor from their videos. Therefore, I am posting them again, so that you all can see how special they are. This is Simon. He wasn't too talkative in the video and he seems aloof. There is a reason for this. Simon was suffering from stomach pains and a headache (probably from hunger). He could really use a sponsor. Here is the run down of what he is saying in the video:

Chim asked him what his name was and the grade he was in. He told Chim that he was Simon Hamooya doing grade 7 at Simwaba basic school. Asked what education sponsorship he needed. He told me that he needs help paying for his school fees, shoes, uniforms and socks. He says he is having stomach pains and headache.

Simon Hamooya's profile can be found under the primary boys. His sponsorship is pending- there is a potential sponsor- he will be marked as sponsored once payment is received.

Meet Alfred Muube #593!

This cutie is named Alfred. He was born on the US independence day July 4th. This July 4th, he will turn 13 years old! He is in the 7th grade, but he has a lot of schooling left to do. He would like to be a doctor, so if can get a sponsor to support him through secondary as well, he will be closer to his dream. He lives in Simwaba with his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. His household chore is gardening. In his free time, he likes to play soccer.

Alfred's sponsorship is pending. A sponsor has expressed interest in sponsoring him- Once the payment is received, he will be marked as sponsored!
