Mission and Purpose

Mission and Purpose
Our mission at Child-Hope Zambia is to reduce poverty, HIV/AIDS and improve the living standards of rural children in Zambia. This is done through equipping the children and the parents with different skills and knowledge that will enable them contribute to their well being.

In order for us at Child-Hope to help the communities realize their dreams, the following needs are essential for the support of the children: Education, health, nutrition, security, protection and religious support. Child-Hope strives to realize the dreams and hopes for orphans and other vulnerable children in the rural communities.

However, we at Child-Hope Zambia can not do this alone as it needs concerted efforts from the donors, church ministries, well-wishers, individuals, companies, foundations etc. This will help the organization realize the dream of the children. Child-Hope has continued serving the rural children even in places that have never been reached before by other NGOs. So far, Child-Hope is the only organization that has direct programmes on children in this Chiefdom.

Our organization is really determined to continue restoring hope to the children who have lost it as a result of losing their parents.

Child-Hope has the following activities in trying to fulfill its objectives:

-Putting up buildings for Early Childhood Development Classes (Day Care Centers) through community participation shared among 15 villages. Under this, the community undergoes mobilization for community development training so as to support mobilization and local resource sourcing. However, these buildings are also used by the primary school going children in the afternoon because government rural schools do not have enough classroom blocks.

-Establishing Day Care Centers and Pre-Schools for young children and literacy classes for adults to improve their reading and writing skills.

-Child feeding programs to support and encourage orphans and other vulnerable children to attend school.

-Health support by making common drugs available to the children e.g. de-worming drugs, anti malaria ,anti bilharzias, panadol and aspirin.

-Income generating activities to improve the community capacity in supporting their children. Activities include mothers clubs who sew different children’s clothes, jerseys, uniforms and table clothes. Youth clubs undertaking piggery, goat rearing skills development activities and gardening. These Income generating activities ensure sustainability of the project.

-HIV/AIDS adolescent youth awareness and education program through peer education and moral upbringing to fight HIV/AIDS in the rural communities. Here, the organization also uses sports participation to disseminate information about HIV/AIDS. It uses sports like soccer, netball and volleyball. Villages compete against each other and the best teams get prizes. This encourages the communities to do more in HIV/AIDS activities. Child-Hope also uses drama, poems and songs to disseminate information about HIV/AIDS. Peer educators have been trained to handle most of the HIV/AIDS programs in the communities.

-Provision of food and medicines to the people living with HIV/AIDS. On the provision of medicines to the people living with HIV/AIDS, Child-Hope makes available: panadol, aspirin. ORS and procaine penicillin. These drugs suppress other diseases that may affect the bodies of the people living with HIV/AIDS due to weak anti bodies caused by HIV/AIDS.

-Home visits to the people living with HIV/AIDS through Child-Hope caregivers. The caregivers feed, wash and clean the homes of the people living with HIV/AIDS that do not have the energy to do this for themselves as a result of sickness. The caregivers also help in turning the bodies and applying medicine to the people living with HIV/AIDS that have developed sores due to over sleeping on one side.

-Gender training workshops for community members to support effective and gender sensitive development. This has helped the rural communities especially the women whose Rights were not considered before.

-Provision of food and nutritional security of the malnourished children directly or indirectly affected by HIV/AIDS.

-Provision of immediate nutritional support to the children identified as acutely malnourished through a monitored supplementary feeding program.

-Establishing communal gardens which increase the food and nutritional security of the malnourished children identified as stunted. 80% of the vegetables in the gardens are consumed by the children and 20% of the vegetables are being sold for the continuation of purchase of seed for gardening.

-Ongoing sponsorship of some children attending basic education
-Distribution of mosquito nets so as to reduce the high rates of malaria cases among the children.
-Provision of maize seed and fertilizer to the families that are hard to reach due to socio-economic situation in which they exist.

Another Mulomba Emergency!

Little Gift looks the picture of health to me.  This is him at the distribution held in April.  He received a medical exam, and serious problems were found.  The summary was: respiratory problems, deformed chest, heart murmur with tachypnea, migraine headaches, physical disability, child to be seen by surgeon to ascertain the positions of the chest organs.

It was discovered that Gift's heart is growing at an alarming rate.  Chim contacted me today to let me know that we have a medical emergency, and we have taken immediate action.  He may need to go to Lusaka, and that is something that Chim will look into.  At any rate, I have sent the funds in advance of the sponsor's payment, so that there is no delay.  Chim will be in Mazabuka in the next few hours, and will make sure that Gift is taken care of on that end.  Next, we will have to wait and see what the doctors say.  Please have Gift and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he and his family go through this very scary experience!

A Boy to be Healed

Clever's condition has worsened.  It just kills me to see him like this.  This is not acceptable for any child!!  They are not sure what is ailing his tummy, but the malnutrition is something that is 100% preventable.  I have to think that Clever's mother didn't know there was help out there and that is why it took so long for her to reach out to CHILDHOPE.

Now that she has reached out, the situation is so dire, that I just pray we are given enough time (by God) to save this child.

In many poor countries malnutrition is so rampant that most mothers have seen at least one of their children die.   Can you imagine?!  If that does not speak a thousand words, I don't know what does!  If you are a mother, you can expect that at least one of your children will die!  I have 2 daughters myself, and even if I had 11 children, it would be too much for me to watch 1 of those 11 children die!!  How these ladies are strong enough to carry on and do the best for their children in spite of these extreme heartaches I do not know.

Imagine being a mother and seeing your child like this and not being able to do anything  about it.  This is not my child, but yet, I feel like all of these children are my responsibility.  I just wish I could get to the hospital and put my arms around them and harrass the doctors and nurses to get them the care they need.  Since I can't, I will do all that I can do from here.

About CHILDHOPE-ZAMBIA Part 4~ HIV/AIDS Education

Sexual health and HIV/AIDS

Pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) affect many children and youths in the rural areas because they are denied the right to protect themselves. CHILDHOPE awareness-raising and direct response programmes help to empower children and young people so that they can realize their rights and achieve their full potential. CHILDHOPE directly involves children and young people in all of its work by helping them to identify problems and find solutions. We work with partners and communities to:

• Advocate for the rights of children and youths living in a world with HIV

• Provide prevention, care and support services to the people living with HIV and AIDS including children.

• Confront beliefs and attitudes that maintain unequal power relations between the sexes.

• Support quality reproductive and sexual health education and services

• Provide home-based care kits and train caregivers.

• Strengthen/form HIV/AIDS school clubs.

• Provide HIV/AIDS adolescent youth awareness and education program through peer education and moral upbringing to fight HIV/AIDS in the rural communities. The organization uses;
o Sport to disseminate information about HIV/AIDS. These are football, netball and volleyball. Villages compete with each other and the best teams get prices. This encourages the communities to do more in HIV/AIDS activities. Other messages on HIV/AIDS are disseminated as they engage in sporting activities.

o Drama, poems and songs to disseminate information about HIV/AIDS. Peer educators have been trained to handle most of the HIV/AIDS programmes in the communities.
• Provide food and medicines to the people living with HIV/AIDS. On the provision of medicines to the people living with HIV/AIDS, CHILDHOPE avails Panadols, asprin.ORS and procaine penicillin. These drugs suppress other diseases that may affect the bodies of the people living with HIV/AIDS due to weak anti bodies caused by HIV/AIDS.

• Conduct home visits to the people living with HIV/AIDS through CHILDHOPE caregivers.

Medical Reports and More Letters are Here!!

The Fall Medical Exam Reports and even some more letters have arrived from Zambia! I have to say regarding the medical exams that many of the "healthy" children got treatment that they would not have received had they not gotten examined. This is a great gift to give these children!! In fact, of the 59 children checked, 42 children were found to have health problems! Of the health problems that are treatable, the children were given the medications that they needed. Some of the children will need further care to treat the more serious on-going illnesses. Over-all, though it is sad to see the children suffering from anything, at least the exam and treatment brought them relief!

There is still time to get your sponsored child on the list for Winter Medical Exams. November 15th is the last day to pay for the exam to get the child checked in the next round of medical exams. It is only $10, and you will receive the results of the exams as well. To get your child on the list, send an e-mail to macandmic@gmail.com

Medical Exams 2010- Fall 2010 Part 5

This is a group picture of the children seen during the Fall 2010 Medical Exam Assembly. This is only 2/3 of the children, and even then, some of the children are hidden. I count 41 children in these pictures, but a total of 62 children were seen. You can see several of them holding their sodas- That goes along great with a medical assembly right? LOL! I know they enjoyed the sugary drinks, though!

Medical Exams 2010- Fall 2010 Part 4

Tebby sits with his mother as they speak with the person helping take the health records of the children.

Can you see the shade from the tree below? Everyone packed in close to share the shade and pass the time. This is like the waiting room at the doctor's office. =)

You can see by the picture right above that the children took their turns with the technician who was running the tests. They were, also, individually seen by the nurse, and that was a private session away from the crowd- because of the sensitivity of it. I am so happy that 62 children were seen! That means that 62 children are on their way to a healthier future!! Our next medical exam assembly can take place after we have sponsors commited to paying for at least 50 children. We currently have 196 children sponsored, so it shouldn't take long to reach the 50 child mark (since 134 of the children have not yet received an exam). It only costs $10 to provide the child with a medical exam!! If you would like to your sponsored child to be on the list for a medical exam, send an e-mail to macandmic@gmail.com Payment for the winter medical exams will be due by 11/10/10 (November 10th).

Medical Exams- Fall 2010 Part 3

These are the pictures of the lab technician conducting the testing for Malaria, HIV, and a urialysis. They are using the forms provided by Cindy! The results will be sent to the sponsors and will help with the children's treatment. It was great news to hear that all of the children were free of malaria!! Now, if we can keep them under their mosquito nets at night fo only $6 a net, they should stay that way! Thanks for helping these wonderful children!!

Moonga Preschool Children Part 2

Clever Mweemba #1069 above and his sister Loveness Mweemba Cheelo # 1070 below
Loveness Mwiinga #1071 below
These children are in a desperate situation. The parents of Loveness Mwiinga have passed away, and so her aunt is raising her along with her 4 siblings and her aunts 5 children. Talk about a busy woman! The aunt you see in the video is raising 9 children all on her own! Not only that but she is ill and so are these 3 children. Because of this these 3 children especially are in need of a sponsor. If you feel like you would like to sponsor one of these sweet children, send an e-mail to macandmic@gmail.com
