This is Grace 315. She is in the 7th grade. Since her sponsorship started in September, and she is really not in need of a uniform at this point in the school year... She received two bags full of beans to share with her family. Looking at the smile on her face, it looks like she is already thinking of the delcious meals she will eat thanks to the bags of food!

Here are the preschool students sponsored since May. They received towels, toilet paper, toothbrush, tooth paste, soap, laundry detergent, etc.

A Little Guy with a Big Dream

Check out this cute little guy!! Hanatonga is in preschool, and as you can see, he loves the sponsorship program!! Looking at him in the pictures, you can see there is something a little different in his appearance compared to the other children in his village. His arms and legs are extremely skinny, and equally alarming is that instead of standing on the dirt ground, he must sit on it!

You see, something went wrong. His mother is not sure what happened when he was born, but she thinks something happened at birth. Baby Hanatonga did not reach the normal milestones, rolling over, crawling, walking, running... In fact, every movement he made seemed to take a lot of effort.

Now that is has grown up some and moved on to preschool, he still can't run and play with his friends. You see, not only can Hanatonga not walk, he still can't even crawl. He must watch from the sidelines as the children around him play soccer, tag, and other preschool games. In order to get to school, his sister carries him all the way (talk about sisterly love!!)

There is hope for him on the horizon, if there are hearts willing to help. For $500, Hanatonga can become mobile and almost independent- that is the cost of a child's size wheelchair. As he gets older (and if he does start to grow bigger), maybe in his late teenage years, he would then need a larger wheelchair. For now, $500 is all it will take to make this little guy's dream of playing and independence a reality!!

Medical Reports and More Letters are Here!!

The Fall Medical Exam Reports and even some more letters have arrived from Zambia! I have to say regarding the medical exams that many of the "healthy" children got treatment that they would not have received had they not gotten examined. This is a great gift to give these children!! In fact, of the 59 children checked, 42 children were found to have health problems! Of the health problems that are treatable, the children were given the medications that they needed. Some of the children will need further care to treat the more serious on-going illnesses. Over-all, though it is sad to see the children suffering from anything, at least the exam and treatment brought them relief!

There is still time to get your sponsored child on the list for Winter Medical Exams. November 15th is the last day to pay for the exam to get the child checked in the next round of medical exams. It is only $10, and you will receive the results of the exams as well. To get your child on the list, send an e-mail to macandmic@gmail.com

Camera Scavenger Hunt

We are shipping disposable cameras out for the children to participate in a Camera Scavenger Hunt. The children will get to take the cameras home with them, and they will get a list such as this one that is only in draft form right now:

"Do you know how to play Camera Scavenger Hunt? Do you see something on the list? Find it through the window, click the button and take your picture! Color in the smiley face when you have taken the picture of each one on the list. Be sure to keep your fingers away from the window! Don’t forget to put your name on the bottom…do you know your sponsors name? You can write that in too!

To participate, the sponsor only needs to provide for the costs incurred- $8 to purchase the disposable camera and have it shipped to Zambia! Then, in February 2010, it will be $8 to get the cameras shipped back and then off to their sponsors. A total of $16, and you are left with 27 photos that your child took all by themselves! (For Canadian sponsors, it will be $8 now and $10 in February 2010. For all other countries outside the USA, it will be $8 now and $12 in February 2010)
