We sent several cameras over to the children in Zambia to take pictures of their families, friends, school, homes, etc. The cameras came in the mail today. I was pleasantly surprised in how well most of the pictures turned out. I am posting the majority of my photos to the yahoo group, so if you aren't a part of the group yet, let me know and I will send you an invite. You will be seeing more pictures from the kids here, too. They did a great job!!!

Meet Clivert Mweemba #372

Clivert is one of our oldest (if not THE oldest) 7th graders. Due to financial hardships, he has missed getting a complete education. He is now, 19 years old, and will actually be tuning 20 while still in 7th grade. His grandmother has a difficult time paying for her grand children's education. He will likely not get into 8th grade as the school costs go up immensely. In spite of this, he has big plans.

In his recent letter to his potential sponsor, he wrote many encouraging things:

"If I could change one thing in my village, I would change the illiteracy rate because my people do not see the importance of an education.
If I could have any superpower, I would like to be able to do gardening because I would be able to earn extra income through selling of fruit and vegetables.
I'm very energetic and innovative in terms of supporting the community and environment by discouraging people from massive cutting down of trees and charcoal burning in order to prevent global warming."

Baby Class~ Luse Mweemba #1123

As you already know by reading yesterday's post, CHILDHOPE believes that education is one of the most powerful tools to break the cycle of poverty. Because of this, we have established several early education centers where children as young as 1 year old may come to learn. Luse is one of the children that attends the center. She is only 1 1/2 years old, but her mother believes that the things she learns there will give her a head start in school. And, it has been proven!

For instance in Mazabuka, primary school teachers in the targeted communities have reported that children who enroll for the first class at primary-level after having attended CHILDHOPE ECCDE programme perform better academically, socially and emotionally than their classmates. CHILDHOPE ECCDE programmes have been most successful where strong relationships among the communities and the basic school teachers have been formed. Our basic school improvement work involves child participation and school governance.

I asked the lady in the video what her name was. She told me that she was Lucia Lwiindi the mother to the child in the video. Asked if the child was in school. The lady told me that the child as attending the CHILDHOPE supported ECCDE in Manyana. Asked what help the child required in school. The lady told me that the child requires education support in terms of books, uniforms, shoes, pencils etc. The lady was asked if the child had any health complications. She told me that the child was suffering from stomach pains and coughing. When she starts coughing, the girl even loses appetite.

The lady in the video is Precious Mweemba. I asked the relationship Precious had with the girl and she told me that the girl was her younger sister. Asked if the girl was in school. Precious told me that the girl was in school at Hakwambwa School doing grade 7.Asked how she thinks her younger sister could be helped in school. Precious said that she was appealing for someone to help her sister’s education through the purchase of books, paying school fees etc. Asked the child her name. She told me that she was Chilala Muluma.
I also asked Chilala what support she needed in school and this is what she had to tell me. “I am appealing for someone to support my education through the purchase of uniforms, books, school bag etc.” Asked if the girl had any health complications. The elder sister told me that the younger sister was suffering from stomach pains. This is the family where Cathreen Mweemba one of the sponsored children comes from.

Jenny Michelo family Manyana

I asked the lady in the video what her name was. She told me she was Jenny Michelo the grandmother to the children. I asked the lady to introduce the children and she told me that the child in the middle was Brian Chidila while the other boy was Fred Mweemba. Asked the lady what support these children needed. The lady told me that she was appealing for someone to support her grandchildren’s education through the purchase of books,uniforms,shoes etc.
Asked what grades the children were doing, the lady told me that the children were attending the CHILDHOPE Manyana supported ECCDE centre. I asked the lady if the children had any health complications. The lady in the video told me that Brian was suffering from stomach pains and continuous headache while Fred had complications with his body. He spent most of the time sleeping.

Meet Linias Mweemba

I asked the boy what his name was .He told me that he was Linias Mweemba. Asked what grade he was doing .He told me that he was doing his grade 3 at Simwaba basic school. He says he needs a sponsor so he could continue with school .He is appealing for someone to sponsor him through the purchase of school items. He says when he is educated; he will be able to help his parents and siblings. He told me that without sponsorship it will be very difficult for him to be educated because his family can not afford the things he needs for school.

I asked the lady in the video what her name was. She told me that she was Anna Mweemba. She told me that the children in the video were hers. I asked her to introduce the children and she told me that the child wearing a blue suit was Innocent Mweemba attending CHILDHOPE supported ECCDE centre at Dindi. She then told me that the child wearing a striped shirt was Hudson Mweemba attending CHILDHOPE supported ECCDE at Dindi. She also told me that the child wearing red trousers was Chipo Mweemba attending CHILDHOPE supported ECCDE at Dindi. She told me that she was appealing for someone to help her purchase school requirement for her children. She is appealing for the purchase of books, uniforms, toys, pencils erasers etc.

I asked the man what his name was and he told me that he was Evans Mweemba.Asked him what relationship he had with the children and he told me that four of the five children were his and the other was his grand child. Asked to introduce his children and told me that the first child to the left was Kelvin Mweemba doing grade 5 at Simwaba basic school. I then asked him the name of the girl in the green dress and he told me that she was Mutinta Mweemba doing grade 3 at Simwaba basic school.
Asked the name of the third child from the left and he told me that the boy`s name was Arnold Michelo doing grade 3 at Simwaba basic school. He then told me that the boy in white T-shirt and navy blue trousers was Peter Mweemba doing grade 1 at Simwaba basic school. He told me that the girl he was carrying was Mary Mweemba attending CHILDHOPE supported ECCDE center in Simwaba. Asked what help the children required in school, he told me that the children need books, pencils, help paying school fees etc. I asked the children as to how they would like to be helped and they said they would appreciate being supported in the purchase of school books, uniforms, pencils and paying fees.

Mrs. Mweemba's bike Part 2

She says she is so grateful for the donation. She says tell Meghan that she is so grateful for the donation. She says she has been unable to walk. Meghan, who has purchased the bicycle for her has given her legs. She says she will be able to do a lot of things using the bicycle. She says she is very grateful. CHILDHOPE has brought a lot of development in communities. She said that Heather should shake hands on behalf of Mrs.Mweemba with Meghan and tell them how grateful she is for the bike. She appealed to CHILDHOPE and the sponsors/donors to continue with its good works.

We received a generous donation from Meghan who wanted to provide a bike for Mrs. Mweemba. Mrs. Mweemba did not know the bike was coming. When Chim and team took the bicycle to Mrs. Mweemba, it was a very big surprise. When they told her that somebody purchased a bicycle for her in line with the first video of appeal. She really thanked God for the donation. She could not believe that the bicycle was her. She started rolling on the ground as a sign of appreciation. Thanks to the sponsors for touching lives!!

Update- Mrs. Mweemba

Mrs. Mweemba is in for a treat this month! Last month, she received a blanket, and she mentioned that a bike would help her in the tasks she must do to fend for her grandchildren. Meghan saw the video and decided to help! She immediately sent the money needed to purchase a sturdy bike that will be able to withstand the rough terrain. This money will be headed for Zambia were the CHILDHOPE team will purchase and deliver the bike to her! Thank you so much, Meghan!! This is sure to be a big help to this family!

None of her grandchildren have been sponsored yet. She has one boy in the 3rd grade whose bio I have attached below. The other two children are in preschool- Jenipher will be headed into the first grade in January 2010, and I have posted her bio below. The other child is #1058. His photo is not a great one (very blurry), but you can see him on the video with Jenipher, Nomarks and Mrs. Mweemba. I haven't attached his photo, but he is available as well. It would be great to be able to deliver the news to Mrs. Mwemba that at least one of her grandchildren has been sponsored as well. I have put the child's name right below their picture. You can see that these children have come pretty unique names. It got me wondering how the families go about naming their children. I asked our yahoo group the question, "how do Zambians name their children?" Susan researched and came up with this information found at afrikannames.com:

"Several cultures in Zambia name the child the day its navel cord finally falls
off. Commonly, the maternal grandmother conducts the naming ceremony and the
maternal side of the family takes responsibility for asking the mother whom she
dreamt of during her pregnancy. Elders also ask the baby (directly) if s/he has
come back as one of its ancestors. If the baby smiles, the elder believes s/he
has found the appropriate name. If the baby cries through the night, then the
elders select another name, and another, until the child sleeps peacefully
through the night."
